This Thanksgiving means more to me than any other. Last Tuesday my husband was in a very serious accident at work and had his head pinned between a JLG lift cage and a steel purlin. The machinery's arm got stuck and would not stop booming out leaving my husband with no room to move or escape. His hard hat saved his head from being crushed but after the outer edges of the hard hat took some pressure his jaw broke in two places - at his chin and top right of his jaw. He also had quite a few stitches behind his ear where the hard hat and safety glasses subsequently dug in. How, we don't know (miracle I say) but the unit stopped booming out and he was able to wedge his head out.
We spent the first day at the hospital in our small hometown but he needed surgery and only Ottawa hospitals could do that. (one hour away) The next day we went to Ottawa but had to wait 14 hours for a bed to be available. Surgery was not do-able as the hospital surgery rooms were very busy and dental surgery doesn't take precedence. Hubby had to sleep sitting up as his jaw was so loose. The next morning he had to fast again to see if you he would be lucky enough to get into surgery after 4 p.m. We got the wonderful news that they would take him in at 7 p.m. barring no other extreme accidents would come into the hospital.
The surgery was successful and his jaw must be wired shut for 6 weeks. For any of you who personally know my husband you know just how much he loves food. This will be a very difficult time for him. Everything he eats must be drank through a straw. If you have any wonderful tasty soup recipes please send them along if you get a chance. I can blenderize anything.
So, this Thanksgiving means more to me than any other ever has. My husband is alive and I thank the Lord so deeply for that. Also, both of my dear parents had out patient surgeries on Friday as well - and they both came out with clean bills of health too. Thankful, indeed.
